Clinical and Biochemical Features of Adult Diabetes - DiVA

C-peptide (connecting peptide), a 31-amino-acid polypeptide, represents the midportion of the proinsulin molecule. Proinsulin resembles a hairpin structure, with an N-terminal and C-terminal, which correspond to the A and B chains of the mature insulin molecule, oriented parallel to each other and linked by disulfide bonds. Normal C-peptide levels for a fasting test are generally considered to be anything between 0.5 nanograms (ng) per millileter (ml) and 3 ng/ml, although people who do not have diabetes may occasionally stray out of this range. C-peptide can be used to help evaluate the production of endogenous insulin (insulin made by the body's beta cells) and to help differentiate it from exogenous insulin (insulin that is not produced by the body, e.g. injected insulin, which does not contain C-peptide). The normal range of C-peptide in blood is between 0.5 to 2.0 ng/mL.

A person whose pancreas does not make any insulin (type 1 diabetes) has a low level of insulin and C-peptide. A person with type 2 diabetes can have a normal or high level of C-peptide. When a patient has newly diagnosed type 1 or type 2 diabetes, C-peptide can be used to help determine how much insulin the patient's pancreas is still producing and whether or not that insulin is being used effectively.. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune process that often starts in early childhood and involves the destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas over time.

C-peptide is considered appropriately supressed if less than 94 pmol/L during hypoglycaemia.

In the beta cells of the islet of Langerhans of the pancreas, the chains of pros=insulin are separated during the conversion of proinsulin to insulin and C-peptide. C-peptide is released into the portal vein in nearly equal amounts.

C peptide normal range

A level of C-peptide that's lower than normal means that your body isn't making enough insulin. A C-peptide test measures the level of C-peptide in your blood or urine.

I'm in Australia, so the actual numbers won't make any sense if you're in the US. C‑peptide is a single chain 31‑amino acid (AA 33‑63) connecting (C) polypeptide with a molecular weight of approximately 3021 daltons. In the process of biosynthesis of insulin the C‑peptide is formed as a by‑product together with insulin by the proteolytic cleavage of the precursor molecule proinsulin, stored in secretory granules in the Golgi complex of the pancreatic β‑cells. 2017-05-01 · The analytical measurement range on the Cobas e411 C-peptide assay was 0.003–13.3 nmol/L or 0.010–40.0 μg/L.
